JULY 2007 MT BORAH, Lost River Range near Mackay, Id.

MT Borah is the highest peak in Idaho, over 12,600 feet. I climbed it the first time in 2004 and swore I would never do it again---the peak is steep, jagged, and features an exciting zone called “Chicken Out Ridge” where many people decide to do just that. But three years is enough time for blisters to heal and sharp memories to fade. So with a different group, I climbed MT Borah again. It was quite a bit easier the second time, but still a steep climb. I learned to mentally break the climb into 4 stages: first the tree area; second the high, open area; third stage is “Chicken Out Ridge”; fourth comes the trek to the summit. Focusing on one stage at a time helps me, and what a view. A stop en route at the “Watering Hole” in Carey, ID can’t hurt either.
